How do we transition to the sustainable energy system of the future?

The consequences of global warming are no longer deniable. We see the impact worldwide: drought, wildfires, and floods are no longer exceptions.

After discovering the field of gas in Groningen, the Netherlands built its energy system around gas. It was the primary and, for many years, the cheapest source of energy and heat. In the following years, extensive efforts were made to bring this to every household, ensuring comfort in every home. While this marked a significant leap in prosperity for the Netherlands, it is now considered unsustainable from our current perspective. CO2 emissions, earthquakes in the gas extraction area, and geopolitical events such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have further fueled the discussion about our dependence on gas. Additionally, the climate law has provided more direction and vision for the energy transition, aiming towards a 100% sustainable energy system.

Essent

Due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, energy has transitioned from being a commodity to becoming a high-interest product. Consumers are becoming increasingly critical when choosing the right energy supplier, a trend that Essent has noted as well. In previous years, Six Fingers conducted an analysis for Essent to understand how societal sentiment is changing in the Netherlands and how this impacts Essent’s services. By providing trend presentations to teams, they can better anticipate changes in the market and develop products and services that align with these shifts.

The services applied in this project are trend research and value innovation.

Enexis

Enexis is a grid operator responsible for managing the cables and pipelines that transmit electricity and gas across a large part of the Netherlands. They are deeply involved in the energy transition, which raises many questions for them. Together with Enexis, we have worked on shaping the energy system of the future. What scenarios are possible, and how should Enexis prepare if any of these scenarios become a reality? It is crucial to consider trends that impact Enexis but whose outcomes remain uncertain. Envisioning and preparing for these scenarios ensures that Enexis is always ready for upcoming developments in technology and society. What happens when power blocs control energy? Or what happens when they’re made universally accessible? These are the questions that occupy our minds.

The services applied in this project are value innovation and systems analysis.

Odink & Koenderink

Odink & Koenderink has been in existence for over 100 years. During this century, they have built a strong reputation for plug-and-play switchgear for the low-voltage network. However, this network is changing due to increased sustainable energy generation and the shift away from gas. The government is asking companies to be more flexible with energy, but how exactly do you achieve that, and how can Odink & Koenderink’s age-old expertise assist them in this endeavor? This question is central to the strategic project we are guiding for Odink & Koenderink by bringing together experts from various fields. We transform the insights gained into a clear strategy for the coming years.
