Gen X (1965 – 1980)
Generation X, born between 1965 and 1980, is often overshadowed by the attention for Millennials and Gen Z. However, they are the largest group, numbering around 4 million in the Netherlands alone. They were the pioneers of the digital revolution and modern pop culture, and have had a lasting impact on society by instigating numerous social and economic changes.
Unlike the protest-driven baby boomers, Generation X sought their place in society. They are down-to-earth and pragmatic, characterized by their relativism and individualism. Growing up during a time of increasing divorces and dual-income families, they became independent and self-reliant at an early age. This has shaped them into a generation that is not dependent on traditional structures and authorities, but rather relies on their own abilities and insights.
Additionally, Generation X is known as connectors. After the 'intense' baby boomers, who fought for their own freedom, this generation is focused on building connections between people, groups, opinions, and cultures. They are tolerant and accept diversity in gender, sexuality, and ethnicity, contributing to a more inclusive and diverse society. Their open-minded attitude fosters a more harmonious and united society.

Like every generation, they were shaped by the circumstances in which they grew up, which now influence their norms, values, and beliefs. Fortunately, apart from the obstacle of busy schedules, it’s not difficult to reach or speak with Gen Xers. We interviewed colleagues, friends, and unfamiliar Gen Xers to answer the question: “What defines Generation X?”
